Meta, parent of Facebook and Instagram, is considering launching a new Twitter-like social network, according to Metacontrol’s unnamed sources . The internal codename for the project is “P92.” The platform would be decentralized, meaning users could create different servers or communities with distinct rules outside of control by Meta. Mastodon, with about 2.5 million users, is a decentralized social network that was launched in 2016. Twitter (launched July 15, 2006) has about 450 million users. Facebook (launched February 4, 2004) has about 2.94 billion users.
The decentralized Federated (server-to-server protocol) is known a ActivityPub, introduced at the World Wide Web Consortium on January 23, 2018.
